    Powerheads and the ApexJr

Post by dwolson2 on Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:01 pm

The ApexJr can control powerheads in 2 ways
On off, like just about any other thing that plugs into the wall
    and variable like 40/50/60%(Module needed)

The question was posed to me today could you turn a powerhead on and off quickly to create a wave, or at least varying current in the tank.

Since the ApexJr can turn the powerhead on one second and off the next, I would think that part is possible.

Here is the worry that i have. Some powerheads have clutches to make sure they spin a certain way(AC) I have heard others have some sort of brakes?
So what powerhead could you use in the on off on fashion without breaking something, and not cutting down on life expectancy.

The powerhead that was in question was a Korali 1050gph.

Lastly, one idea I had was to power on 5 seconds, then off for 1, so the impeller wouldn't completely stop, kind of bypassing the problem with AC powerheads.

    So what do you think?

you need to ask that question in the Neptune section in rc. I would imagine it would work the the results aren't going to be what's expected.

I used to have a very elementary timer that did just this. There were two dials on the front and you could vary the on and off times. It is feasible to do with the apex, but you will kill any pump over time by doing this unless it is made for wavemakers.

doesn't the apex have the capability to control the ecotech marine pumps (ie. mp 20 and mp 40)??

yeah, i never got the desire to do that with an Apex/AC. You spend a ton of cash on the vortech with its own nice built in controller and then go out and spend another 75-80$ on one for your apex/ac so you can do the same thing...

Koralia EVOLUTION 1050 High Flow Power Head by Hydor.

The Koralia Evolution 1050 circulation pump offers the apex in efficiency and flow. Designed to work with wave timers, Koralia Evolution 1050s also feature extremely low power consumption and superior energy efficiency.

it says its designed to work with wave timers so does that mean i can use it with the apex??
